Nomad Shorts for Your Travel and Adventures by Tami Mittan

Here in Colorado, I love that our grade schools take kids on hiking, snow shoeing, and camping field trips. This week, I ditched my office job for a day on the trails with my daughter’s third grade class. It would be a sunny 70-degree day on the Colorado National Monument, and thus the perfect opportunity to try out my new Spring Stonewear Designs pieces which are perfect for hiking, in particular the Nomad Short.

Although I’m very much in love with the comfort of my fitness fabric pants, capris, and shorts made by Stonewear, I was excited this season to see the addition of the Nomad pieces that offer more of a traditional khaki look. Because of the inseam design and stretch fabric, they still offer great comfort.

So how do they perform on the trail?

Well, since I tested them out during my daughter’s field trip, I must admit that I feel a little bit like we cheated–they bused us up to the top elevation of the trail… and then had us hike down!  But, I reminded myself, just because they are from a beautiful outdoors-oriented state, not all of these kids come from hiking families. For many, this was a rare exposure to trekking a 2-mile plus trail.  And boy, did they love it!

First I should mention that I started the cooler morning wearing my all-time favorite Lola Hoody as an added warmth layer, and had three other grown up volunteers oooohh-ing and aaaahh-ing over it. Between the adorable floral print, and the lusciously soft yet technical fabric – it’s a worthy object of desire!  (One of them is a senior manager at the Department of Wildlife… maybe they’ll work them into some new uniforms?)

It didn’t take long for things to heat up in the high mountain desert country of red rocks, scrubby juniper trees, and lizards aplenty. I was happy to have such a lightweight top on underneath (the Turbo Tank), which felt great and kept me cool.

But now on to our headliner: the awesome Nomad Short. Oftentimes when wearing a backpack, the waistband of my bottoms (be it shorts, capris, or pants) tends to creep down with movement and pack friction, creating a continual need to “hike” my pants up. I was thrilled to discover the Nomad Shorts wore extremely well on the trail, and stayed perfectly in place.  The waistband, with its cute contrasting colored piping, lays flat and rests nicely on your hips.

The mesh-lined pockets help to keep your look streamlined. I had plenty of room for my iPhone in a front pocket. There are also two nice slit pockets in back, one with the cool Stonewear Designs logo.

Combining this attractive, classic style with the woven nylon fabric is what makes the Nomad Short an excellent choice for both your outdoor and travel adventures. Whether you are crossing a stream or washing them in a hotel sink to be ready for the next day – this lightweight material will dry quickly, which is always a nice feature.

The fit is true-to-size, and extremely comfortable.  Bend, sit, twist, run… however I moved, they moved with me without any pinching, chafing, or binding. With an inseam of 20”, I think the length is perfect. I love that they give you coverage, but also end well above the knee for optimal freedom of movement.

So we survived our [*ahem* downhill!] hiking adventure with 100+ 9-year-olds, and even had a Grand Finale of S’more making.  I’m looking forward to many more hiking and travel adventures this season in my Nomad Shorts.
