Juliette Gordon Low: Getting Girls Outdoors
In celebration of National Women’s History Month, Beth Nobles sent us this note about her outdoorsy female role model, Juliette Gordon Low:
My family tried camping…once. Soggy canvas tents, indefatigable mosquitoes, loud campground neighbors all made for a miserable excursion for my parents and my sister. But I loved it. So I thank Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, for helping me get more “miserable, but wonderful” experiences outdoors. Because of Low, I learned to build a fire in the rain, to hike all day, and to steer a canoe. And I gained confidence to know that I could rise to just about any challenge.
That’s a great lesson for girls to learn.
